Baillie Gifford announced as new title sponsor
We are delighted to announce that global investment managers Baillie Gifford will become the new title sponsor of the festival, and will also sponsor a new non-fiction strand within the festival’s programme.
Baillie Gifford takes over as title sponsor from Brewin Dolphin after seven successful years of festival growth, in which audiences increased to a record number of 25,300 visitors in 2016. Now in our 14th year, the Borders Book Festival has become established as one of country’s top literature festivals, with its name and brand familiar to authors, publishers and audiences across the UK. As well as bringing a raft of distinguished and popular writers, raconteurs and personalities to the picturesque Scottish Border town of Melrose every June, the festival also nurtures new talent by providing a platform for debut writers and local authors. It also hosts one of the UK’s top book prizes, the Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction.
The new partnership is part of Baillie Gifford’s UK literary festival sponsorship programme. The festival will become the Baillie Gifford Borders Book Festival, and will incorporate a new Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust Non-Fiction Series featuring high profile events on a variety of topical and stimulating subjects.
Alistair Moffat, Director of the Borders Book Festival said of the new association:
“It is a joy and a delight to be working with our new partners, Baillie Gifford. Their enthusiasm is enormously refreshing and their commitment to the Borders Book Festival and literature in general is most welcome. We look forward to working together to create even better festivals.”
James Budden, Director Marketing and Distribution at Baillie Gifford said:
“We have been trying to sponsor the Borders Book Festival for some time. It should prove a great fit with the other festivals Baillie Gifford is associated with in the UK. So it is fantastic to be supporting such a successful literary experience. Being somewhat bookish ourselves we look forward to be involved in the occasion over the next few years at least.”
The 2017 Baillie Gifford Borders Book Festival will be held from 15 - 18 June 2017 at Harmony Garden in Melrose, with over 100 events across the main festival and Family Book Festival, incorporating outreach activities, community events and a programme for young people and school’s events. The programme will be announced on 26 April, after which tickets will go on sale.
Baillie Gifford are also behind Britain's most prestigious non-fiction prize, The Baillie Gifford Prize aims to reward the best of non-fiction and is open to authors of any nationality. It covers all non-fiction in the areas of current affairs, history, politics, science, sport, travel, biography, autobiography and the arts.
Formerly known as The Samuel Johnson Prize (1999 – 2015) it is the most prestigious non-fiction prize in the UK, worth £30,000 to the winner.
