Knight Frank Schools Gala Day, Melrose, Friday 17 June – only £1 per pupil!!
Summer will soon be upon us, and a visit to the Knight Frank Schools Gala Day is the perfect way to wrap up the school year, with a great selection of events for pupils and teachers from Nursery to Primary 7 to enjoy. It's a superb day out in a very safe environment and the line-up of authors, illustrators, archaeologists, historians and performers is simply amazing.
Since the Schools Gala Day programme began in 2006, thousands of pupils and their teachers have joined us in magical Harmony Garden for stellar events with first-class authors. We know that schools are finding it increasingly difficult to afford travel costs for special outings, so this year we’ve taken the decision to reduce our ticket prices from £3 to £1 per child per event! What's more, for the second year we have teamed up with Historic Scotland, who offer free entry to Abbey Day activities, with an additional offer of 75% subsidy on travel costs for groups attending their events.
This year's Schools Gala Day Programme includes:
- The wonderful Sticky Kids Singalong show with Molly Muddle (Nursery – P2)
- Writing and illustration workshops with Debi Gliori and Vivian French (P1 – P3 and P3 – P5)
- Allan Burnett on his terrific book, Robert the Bruce and All That (P4 – P6)
- Nick Thorpe's tales of his sea-faring adventures to Easter Island and around Scotland (P5 – P7)
- A history quiz with Eleanor Updale (with over 100 books to give away to schools as prizes, P6 – P7)
Historic Scotland is joining in the fun with free activities at Melrose Abbey aimed at primary 4s to 7s. A medieval science construction show will follow the journey of a block of stone to the top of an arch, in an archaeology corner, children will get their hands dirty as they talk to archaeologists about what lies under the ground, and there will be storytelling and tours.
The full Schools Gala Day programme will be circulated to each primary school in the Borders after the Easter holidays and it will also be available to download from the Borders Book Festival website very soon.
