Well done to everyone who took part in the third annual Write On! Writing Competition and our congratulations go especially to each of this year’s winners!

Created by Scottish Borders Libraries and the Borders Book Festival, the competition celebrates the talent of young writers in the Scottish Borders. This year, hundreds of schoolchildren from throughout the Borders submitted stories ranging from a variety of topics including sport, heroes, villains and celebrations. The competition judges were very impressed with the quality of writing from the entrants, which made it really difficult for them to choose the overall winners.

The awards event which took place at the Brewin Dolphin Borders Book Festival on Saturday 19 June was introduced by Paul Taylor from Scottish Borders Libraries and hosted by one of today’s best-loved children’s writers and Festival Patron Vivian French, who also presented the winners and runners-up with their prizes.

Prizes included medals, books donated by the publishers Birlinn, Random House, Scholastic, Templar and Walker Books. The first prize winners also won the opportunity to see their stories in print in the Southern Reporter and on the Borders Book Festival and SBC Libraries websites.

This year's writing stars are:

Primary 5
1. Vincent the Viking by Philippa Robertson, Drumlanrig Primary School
2. Powers of a Pro! by Lauren Flack, St Boswell's Primary School
Primary 6
1. Roman Soldier by Sophie Thomson, Duns Primary School
2. Dragonblood by Sophie Frame, Langlee Primary School
